Lawrence Chrismas is a Calgary-based documentary photographer, writer, publisher, geologist, and one of Canada’s most respected mining historians. For more than three decades, Chrismas has explored the culture of Canadian miners through his environmental portraits and thoughtful stories about their lives. He has authored and published a number of books based on his in-depth research on the lives of Canadian miners, including CoalDust Grins – Portraits of Canadian Coal Miners, which was shortlisted for the prestigious Roloff Beny Photography Book Award. His photographs have been exhibited extensively throughout Canada and are in several private and public art collections, including the Mendel Gallery, Glenbow Museum, Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies, and Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography.  Chrismas was awarded a Fellowship in the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, and was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Art for his contributions to the arts through documentary photography. Lawrence Chrismas, RCA, with more than 40 years’ experience as a photographer, has exhibited in numerous spaces and his work resides in collections. He was awarded a fellowship by the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy for preserving mining history through his photography. Recent books by Lawrence include Coal in the Valley (Drumheller area), Canmore Miners and CoalDust Grins~Portraits of Canadian Miners
