Victor Cicansky “Studio Bouquet” Live Auction Lot #3

Victo Cicansky asserts that “art has to come from somewhere.” In his case, Cicansky’s witty bronze and ceramic sculptures are all about the backyard garden: the gardens he remembers from early childhood, the gardens he grows today. Cicansky writes, “Making a garden is a lot like making art….If you want your garden to grow, you have to cultivate it, nurture it, shape it and tend it.”Cicansky’s Garden of the Mind is a creation of both nature and imagination, “a rough and wild garden where ideas grow and hybridize….a rich source of ideas[organized] into my own universe of personal expression .”Born in Regina, Cicansky graduated with a BEd from the University o Saskatchewan (1964), a BA from University of Regina (1965), and an MFA from University of California at Davis (1970). He also studied at the Haystack Mountain School of Art at Deere Isle in Maine. Cicansky has taught at the University of Regina for over 20 years, as well as Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, University of California at Davis, and Banff School of Fine Arts .Cicansky is the recipient of the Victoria and Alberta Award for Ceramic Sculpture, the California Kingsley Annual Award for Sculpture, the Saskatchewan Order of Merit, and many Canada Council grants. In 2007, Cicansky receive dan Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from the University of Regina. In 2009,Cicansky was named a Member of the Order of Canada for his valued contribution to the arts as a mentor, educator and sculptor. Cicansky has exhibited in solo and group show across Canada, the US, Japan and Europe. His work appears in many major public and private collections, including the Saskatchewan Arts Board and the National Gallery of Canada. Recently, Cicansky designed sculptures for a gazebo and entranceway to a a community garden of international significance for the Grow Regina Group.
