Chris Cran “Electric Portrait” Live Auction Lot #4

Chris Cran, RCA, has been described in the New York Times as a painter who “has built a career on tampering with people’s perceptions.” The Banff Centre noted his penchant for “turning nothing into something, with the slightest push.” He explores the issues around representation: the idea of constructing a personal or cultural identity is folded into a perceptual or cognitive illusion, and wrapped in a wry and disarming sense of humour. Cran studied at the Kootenay School of Art in Nelson (1976), and graduated with Honours from ACAD (1979), where he currently teaches. He was inducted into the Royal Canadian Academy of Art in 2002, received the ACAD Alumni
Award of Excellence in 2011, and won the Doug and Lois Mitchell Outstanding Calgary Artist Award in 2014. In addition to his professional activities as a painter and teacher, Cran is actively involved with the internationally recognized One Yellow Rabbit Performance Theatre. Cran’s work is internationally acclaimed and widely exhibited, for example: 49th Parallel Gallery, New York (1992); Taejon Expo 93, South Korea; Fourth International Painting Biennial, Cuenca, Ecuador (1994). A 20 year survey entitled Chris Cran—Surveying the Damage 1977 to 1997, was curated by Clint Roenisch and organized by Kelowna Art Gallery for a national tour (1998-2000). In 2015, Cran held major shows at Art Gallery of Alberta, Edmonton and Southern Alberta Art Gallery, Lethbridge, which culminated in Sincerely Yours, a 35 year retrospective of over 100 works at The National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, in 2016. (This exhibition’s catalogue won three national and two international awards for design).
Cran’s work is represented in collections such as: The National Gallery of Canada, Canada Council Art Bank; Mendel Art Gallery (Saskatoon); University of Lethbridge; Glenbow Museum; Edmonton Art Gallery; Nickle Museum; Kenderdine Art Gallery (Saskatoon); Dunlop Art Gallery (Regina); AlbertaFoundation for the Arts; Art Gallery of Peel (Brampton); Art Gallery of Windsor; Museum of Canadian Contemporary Art (Toronto).
