Helena Hadala, RCA, received a Master of Fine Arts in Drawing from the University of Calgary (2002) after maintaining a full time studio practice for over 30 years. She is an elected member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, and has exhibited in Canada, USA, Japan, Finland, Poland, and most recently, Portugal. Hadala has travelled extensively, resided in Japan for 2 1⁄2 years, and participated in international residencies including Australia and Spain. Recipient of many scholarships, grants and awards, Hadala’s work is featured in numerous private, public, and corporate collections, including Canada Council Art Bank and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.

Zen Buddhist philosophy has informed Hadala’s life and approach to the creative process. The underlying basis of her artistic practice focuses on imagery that reflects a search for a middle ground between intellect and intuition, idea and action. Hadala works in various mediums including oil painting, mixed media drawing, printmaking, and installation, to create works that make contemplation visible and take on tangible form.

Recent solo and joint exhibitions include: Silent Passage (University of Calgary, 2016); something I don’t know what (Alberta Foundation for the Arts Travelling Exhibition, 2014-16); In the Shadow of Montserrat (El Bruc, Spain, 2011); Inhabiting Spaces (Centre for Contemporary Art, Gdansk, Poland; Museum of Fine Art, Porto, Portugal; and Taidenhalli Centre of Contemporary Art, Porvoo, Finland; 2010).
