Describing her process, Laura Pope is succinct: “I walk, look and shoot. Working digitally provides a fast and responsive medium which allows me to deeply explore this intense visual experience.” Pope examines the cultural, sociological and abstract juxtapositions found in urban settings. Searching for the visually compelling in the built environment, she documents the interplay between colours, reflections, seasonal changes, and light. Pope is actively involved in the energy of the very structure she is observing. Her camera is the device which both records and comments, capturing the interaction between objective and subjective.

Pope has worked in Calgary as a photographer, painter, and graphic designer for over 30 years. Graduating first with a Diploma (1978) and then a BFA (1992) from ACAD, Pope taught at the art institution for over 20 years. She also did residencies at Banff Centre and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Pope now has a fulltime practice in studio painting, working with the thousands of photographs taken over many years, both here and abroad.

Professional experience includes: ACAD Instructor (1983-2002), now in Extended Studies (2011-present); Plum Studios, Graphic Design & Photography (2009- present). Selected exhibitions include: The Exposure Photography Festival, Masters Gallery (2015); New paintings / group show, Edge Gallery (2015); ARTwalk, Masters Gallery (2014); The Calgary Sketchbook, Collage Gallery (2008); Architectonics, The New Gallery (2001).
