Through photographs and moving images, Laurel Johannesson examines certain facets of suspended temporality: timelessness, limbo, oblivion, and forgetfulness. In her recent series The Oblivion Seekers, Johannesson explores the relationship of the sea to land or horizon, with human or avian subjects caught in suspension over turbulent seas between freedom (flight) and safety (land).

Johannesson studied at University of Calgary, University of Saskatchewan, and the Royal College of Art in London, and currently teaches at ACAD. She has been a visiting artist and scholar at the American Academy in Rome twice, and an artist in residence in Iceland, Greece, and France. Johannesson is a fellow of the Bau Institute in Italy, and had the rare opportunity to conduct research at the Vatican Library. In 2016, she developed and presented the Hypnos project during an extended period of time in Greece. Her research on temporality, the moving image, interactivity, and generative art has been presented at conferences in Rome, Florence, Milan, London, and Los Angeles.

Johannesson’s work has been exhibited in Italy, Greece, England, France, India, Iceland, Portugal, Argentina, Germany, Japan, Chile, Taiwan, the United States, and Canada. Included in many public and private collections, she was recently honoured to have her work collected by the Department of Foreign Affairs for one of their Canadian embassies abroad.
