Marty Kaufman creates motifs in glass, sculpture, drawings, and photographs, using specific subjects, landscapes or architectures to interpret the transitory experience of place. Kaufman’s work explores a sense of place where one, in a moment of awareness, suddenly connects to the greater meaning of a collective spiritual past, historic religious belief or natural world epiphany. Kaufman seeks to give this intangible human experience a tangible form.
Kaufman studied sculpture at the American School for Artists & Students in Paris, France (1974), and then glass at ACAD (1981). He is currently an Associate Professor at ACAD, and has served as the head of the Glass Department (2003- 06), Chair of Fine Art (2006-07), Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Studies (2007- 10), and on the ACAD Board of Governors (2009-11).
Kaufman’s work has been exhibited and collected nationally and Internationally. Selected exhibitions include: Made in Calgary: the 2000s, Glenbow Museum (2014); 13th Annual Glass Now Exhibition & Auction, National Liberty Museum (Philadelphia, PA, 2012); Natural Flow: Contemporary Alberta Glass, Alberta Craft Council, Edmonton and Esplanade Gallery, Medicine Hat (2011); Cheongiu International Craft Biennale, South Korea (2009); Small Art Objects, Galerie Aqui Siam Ben (Vallauris, Cote d’Azure, France, 2009); Gesture & Cadence, Morgan Contemporary Glass (Pittsburgh, PA, 2008). Collections include: Alberta Craft Council; Alberta Foundation for the Arts; Alberta Trade Commission (New York); Nickle Arts Museum; Husky Oil Collection; Imperial Oil Collection; Marion & Jessie Norman Collection.
Kaufman has been a visiting artist at the American Academy in Rome, and an invited artist in residence at institutions in Greece. Through the focus of his art- related research, Kaufman was granted a lifetime membership to the Vatican Library.
