ABOUT VIVIAN SMITH

Vivian Smith used the time and space of the KOAC residency to develop a body of work exploring social reproductive labor. She shared that the journey to and from the studio reinforced the special nature of the KOAC space, and that while the lack of running water meant adapting her practice, the limitations led to unexpected breakthroughs. The large studio space allowed me to work at scales previously impossible, pushing my exploration of how women's unpaid labour impacts economic independence into new physical dimensions.

This extraordinary space, created through Katie Ohe and Harry Kiyooka's vision and dedication to supporting artists, continues to nurture creative practice in Alberta.

Vivian Smith and KOAC acknowledge the support of the Canada Council for the Arts for the work completed during Vivian’s residency.
