ABOUT SINÉAD LUDWIG-BURGESS
Over the months of May and June 2025, Sinéad Ludwig-Burgess explored The Fragmented Figure as a Visual Language of Grief, examining how loss fractures identity and how the body can become a vessel for mourning, memory, and transformation. Her work reflects the ongoing effort to navigate life in the absence of a loved one, using sculpture as a means of emotional and spiritual reconstruction.
“Being in her home or in places we would frequent feels like standing in the ashes of a love I still ache for. As I learn to navigate a path through this painful experience of loss, I am learning that grief is more than just losing the person who departed, it's about all the parts of myself that died with them.”
Sinéad Ludwig-Burgess draws from thanatology, the study of death, dying, and bereavement, to explore how loss fractures identity and reshapes the emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual self. The materials she chooses function as Thanatological Symbols, each one carefully selected to reflect the layered toll of grief. Using the fragmented figure as a central motif, her work reflects on who we become after loss. Through material and metaphor, she creates a dialogue between the physical body and the emotional weight it carries.
