Sculptor Blake Senini has explored the interaction of light with architectural forms for over a decade, particular with the negative spaces between structures that enclose light. He strives to evoke the same quality of light found in great cathedrals, churches, temples, and synagogues. Senini also integrates the nature of film in his work: light and the repetition of images creating movement and narrative. His installation A Foreign Film comprised six large scale random shapes repeated in laminated wood of up to thirty layers, then illuminated with a shadow effect mimicking the transparency and movement of film. Inspiration for Senini comes from deep and detailed observation. Discovering the sawdust trails of tiny spiders on nocturnal reconnaissance in his studio, Senini photographed what he suddenly saw as ‘drawings’ through his artistic lens.
Tracing the drawings onto paper templates and cutting them from ½ inch steel, the result became “The Night Watch” sculptures. Senini studied at Malaspina College, Nanaimo, and holds a BFA Honours in Sculpture from University of Victoria and an MFA Honours in Sculpture from University of Calgary. He teaches at ACAD, and has won grants from Alberta Foundation for the Arts and Canada Council.
