To Karen Brown, art is all about seeing the world differently, and using art to express feelings about the environment as it is experienced. Art is, therefore, the vehicle used to interpret responses to everyday life. Brown’s work is inspired by architecture, colour, reflections, and the play of light on various surfaces. Her influences include the 20th century Abstract Expressionists of the New York School and The Bay Area Group.

Growing up in Montreal and travelling extensively, Brown moved to Calgary to raise a young family. She studied Interior Design at Mount Royal University, then subsequently worked in design, special events, and developing a boutique hotel. After returning to ACAD to study art (2008-11), Brown now paints fulltime and continues to take studio classes to augment her practice.

Brown is a founding member of the art group ab-straKt 373, which produces two exhibitions a year, successfully rotating artwork through several venues in Calgary and Edmonton. Brown was instrumental in the group’s successful application to the Works Festival (2011, 2012) and mounting three shows at the Northern and Southern Jubilee Auditoriums.

Brown collaborated in the two person show, GULP (2015), and held a solo exhibition, STIX, at Elevation Gallery in Canmore (2016). She currently produces one show a year and participates in several group shows. Selected recent exhibitions include: Group Show, Mountain Museum and Archives (Olds, 2014); Solo Show, Britannia Wine Market (2013); Group Show, Bissett School of Business (Mount Royal University, 2013); Group Show, From 6 Till 7, Holy Grill and Calgary ARTwalk (2012).
