The structuring of space – whether it be physical or illusional – has dominated Linda Craddock’s preoccupation in her painting. While the themes explored are generally conventional, Craddock adopts a neo-expressionist approach that integrates psychological and emotional interpretation with gestural marks and a bold palette. This approach has made her one of the promising representatives of “neo-colorist’ direction in contemporary painting in Alberta. Born in 1952 in Vegreville in northern Alberta, Craddock received her formal art education at the Alberta College of Art + Design in Calgary followed by her graduate studies in painting at the University of Calgary. Craddock uses colour and – in her most recent works combines it with digital video and still photography – to elicit emotional responses from the viewer and to induce social commentary, often focusing her attention on the detrimental effects of industrialization, such as the alienation of individuals in the large urban conglomerates, which she felt a mechanized and impersonal society. Craddock’s art has been a subject of numerous solo and group exhibitions in Alberta. Her work was collected by the Canadian Museum of Photography in Ottawa and included in a video “Portraits of WomenLinda Craddock graduated from the Alberta College of Art in 1974 and received a Master of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Calgary in 1988. Her work has been exhibited Internationally in Public Exhibitions in the U.S.A, Poland and the Czech Republic and Nationally in British Columbia, Ontario, Saskatchewan and Quebec including a touring exhibition with the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography. In Alberta, Public Exhibitions have included the Art Gallery of Alberta in Edmonton as well as the Glenbow Museum and the Nickle Arts Museum in Calgary. Solo exhibition venues include the Visual Arts Alberta Gallery, Edmonton, and the forthcoming One on One Gallery at Medicine Hat College, as well as numerous provincial Artist-run galleries such as Latitude 53 in Edmonton, Off Centre Centre in Calgary and Commercial galleries in several provinces. The Alberta Foundation for the Arts, The Art Gallery of Alberta and the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography in Ottawa have acquired her work for their permanent collections, as have numerous Corporate and Private collectors, Internationally, Nationally and Provincially.
