Well-known Canadian artist Peter Deacon, RCA, explores the geographical and metaphorical significance of the Canadian Rockies, particularly around the Continental Divide. Using a process of “autobiographical mapping”, Deacon incorporates geometry and personal iconography in his paintings, mixed media pieces, and etched copperplates. He always regards his most recent work as being his most successful.

Born on the Isle of Wight, Deacon graduated with a BFA from Portsmouth College of Art (1967), a Masters of Education from the University of Wales (1968), and an MFA from the Slade School of Art, University of London (1970). The recipient of many honours, Deacon won the prestigious Prix de Rome Award, allowing him to work in Rome from 1970 to 1972. Deacon was then appointed as a “Fellow in Fine Art” at the University of Nottingham, England (1973-75). He subsequently taught at the University of Calgary for the next 40 years, becoming Professor Emeritus of Art in 2015. Deacon won the national Alan Blizzard Award in 2004 for exemplary cross-disciplinary innovations in higher education; he was the first University of Calgary faculty member to receive this honour. He is currently Co-Chair of the committee managing the permanent art collection of the Faculty of Medicine, and is an active supporter of the Kiyooka-Ohe Arts Centre.

Deacon’s work is found in many major collections, including: Canada Council Art Bank; Alberta Foundation for the Arts; Victoria and Albert Museum (London, England); Glenbow Museum; Nickle Museum; Air Canada; Big Rock Brewery; Hewlett-Packard Canada; and Toronto Dominion Bank.
